That’s not quite fair to a Marshall team that got the offense cranked up in wins over Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic to get right back into the Conference USA race after dropping the date with Middle Tennessee.

Beat WKU, and then the Thundering Herd would have the inside track to getting to the title game.

The ground attack is the best in the league, the pass rush has been fantastic, and the defense overall has been able to rise up and be a force in key spots over the last few weeks.

But the Hilltoppers are dominating defensively. They’re second in the league behind UAB, they’re great at getting off the field, and they haven’t allowed more than two touchdowns in the last month.

At 4-0 in the conference, win this week, beat FAU next week, and they’ll have a lock on being the East champs.

The WKU run defense is strong enough to hold down the Marshall ground attack, and the offense manages to do a better job of controlling the game and the clock than anyone in the league outside of UAB. It’ll be a defensive battle with the WKU D doing just enough to hold on in drive after drive to survive.

Marshall have been a bit of a mixed bag so far this year, but when they’re on, they’re very on. A large part of that has been Brenden Knox and the rushing game. Knox leads the league in rushing yards with 719 on 118 carries and seven touchdowns. After week one, Marshall has won each of their games where Knox has gained 100 rushing yards.

His team needed him to step up with the dismissal of Tyler King earlier this season and inconsistent play from the rest of the offense and Knox has definitely done so.

Passing has been a pain point for the Herd on both sides of the ball. QB Isaiah Green is completing 57.9 percent of his passes for a total of 1377 yards so far with ten touchdowns and six interceptions. On defense, they’re allowing 248.4 yards through the air but have accumulated 25 sacks so far for the second highest total in the league in that category.

Linebacker Tavante Beckett is a name to watch on defense for the Herd. He has the second highest tackle total in the league with 65 as well as two sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection.

Meanwhile, the Tops sit atop the division and are still undefeated in conference play. This has come largely as a result of a strong defense that has held opponents to the second fewest points (17.9 per game) and yards (287.3 per game) in the league.

Defensive end DeAngelo Malone is a contender for league Defensive Player of the Year leading the league in tackles for loss and sacks. He’s got 16 and nine in those categories respectively. This unit will face their toughest test of the season this week defending Marshall’s rushing attack, which has accumulated a league best 1518 yards on the ground.

A pain point for WKU as of late has been kicking field goals. Kicker Cory Munson is 10 of 16 on the year with at least one miss in each of the last three games. In his last outing against Charlotte, he was three of five with both misses coming from beyond forty yards.

Offensively, running back Gaej Walker continues to be WKU’s biggest offensive contributor. The converted defensive back is up to 628 rushing yards on the year with four touchdowns and four games over 100 yards rushing.

Plan on the WKU defense making a few critical stops. Marshall has struggled to a degree defending the pass, which is great news considering Ty Storey finally seems completely comfortable as the Tops’ QB1. Western Kentucky pulls off the upset 27-20.

Records: Charlotte (4-7, 3-4 C-USA) vs. FAU (5-6, 3-4 C-USA)
Date & Time: Saturday, November 24, 6:00 PM
TV: ESPN3
Location: FAU Stadium, Boca Raton, FL
Betting Line: FAU -17.5 O/U: 54.5
All-Time Series Record: 2-1 FAU leads (FAU won the last matchup 31-12 in 2017)

In the final game of Brad Lambert’s tenure, Charlotte will be playing for pride as they lost their chance for bowl eligibility last week at the hands of FIU.

Following Hasaan Klugh’s best game as a 49er, expect to see him much of the game. A surprise start last week caught FIU off guard, but Florida Atlantic will be prepared.

Klugh’s ability to extend plays with his legs warrants increasing danger for the Florida Atlantic defense, which is giving up 176 yards per game on the ground.

Benny LeMay has been one of the best running backs in C-USA this season, eclipsing the 1,000-rushing yard mark last week. Any chance Charlotte has at winning their first road game of the season rests on LeMay’s shoulders.

Offensively, Charlotte dominates the time of possession battle nearly every week with long drives and consistent handoffs.

FAU’s C-USA leading rushing attack will matchup with a stout Charlotte defense, #2 in the conference allowing just 98.3 yards per game.

Safety Ben DeLuca and LB Jeff Gemmell leads the defense in tackles, and Juwan Foggie’s 6 interceptions ties for the second most in the FBS.

Bottling up FAU’s two-headed monster featuring Devin Singletary and Kerrith Whyte Jr, along with forcing an early turnover is the recipe for Charlotte’s success.

The search for a new head coach has already begun, but the newly ousted Brad Lambert has one last opportunity to bring a W back to the Queen City.

In the final game of the regular season, FAU a chance to close an embattled season with a win and reach a bowl game for the second straight season under Lane Kiffin. Not exactly what FAU fans were expecting when the season started, but I think every Owl will take it. Win, and we’re pretty much a lock to go bowling.

The biggest reason FAU is in this position is because of the best rushing attack in C-USA. In what will more than likely be his last home game of his FAU career, FAU fans will have one more chance to see Devin Singletary, the best player in school history. Singletary has rushed for 1,260 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. Backup running back Kerrith Whyte, Jr. has also been fantastic, rushing for 841 yards and eight touchdowns.

FAU ranks 63rd in Defensive S&P+. Not bad for a unit that was absolutely abysmal in the early half of the season. The 49ers aren’t exactly an efficient team but they are explosive. Limiting those plays will be pivotal. Look for seniors Jalen Young, Shelton Lewis, and Andrew Soroh to play a huge role in making sure they leave FAU Stadium for the final time with a win.

I fully expect Charlotte to be locked in for Brad Lambert’s last game. With that said, it’s also senior day for Lane Kiffin’s guys. Both rushing attacks will be crucial, however I see the FAU defense adjusting in the second half forcing Hasaan Klugh to keep Charlotte in the game. I believe this will be decided by a fourth quarter turnover, ultimately ending with the Atlantic Owls escaping with a victory. FAU 31 Charlotte 24

FAU is averaging 36.2 points per game this season. The magic number for FAU to assure a win is to score 30 points and I think they will get that done. The Owls simply have more to play for and is the more talented team. Considering Charlotte pulled off one of their biggest wins of the Brad Lambert era at FAU two years ago, I’m sure FAU will be ready. FAU 44 Charlotte 23

FIU’s chances of winning Conference USA’s East division were 100-1 according to the Las Vegas sportsbooks entering the season.

Fast forward to week 13 and the young Panther team can clinch a division title with a win. However, they’re facing arguably one of their toughest opponents of the season in the Thundering Herd.

James Morgan has been one of the biggest turnaround stories in college football. The Bowling Green transfer had 26 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions in two seasons as Falcon.

In his first campaign as a Panther, he’s thrown 25 touchdowns and 6 interceptions becoming one of the most efficient passers in FBS football.

A major reason for Morgan’s success is the play of the offensive line.

The unit gave up 23 sacks last season and the number should have been higher if not the athletic Alex McGough behind center. This year’s group has allowed only eight and is coming off of their best performance of the season in the win over Charlotte.

For FIU to win Saturday, Morgan and the offensive line must rise to the occasion against an elite Marshall defense.

The defense has been a mixed bag in year two under Defensive Coordinator Brent Guy.

They’ve had strong performances against Western Kentucky, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Rice and Middle Tennessee State. But they’ve also taken their lumps and given up rushing yards in enormous numbers against multiple teams.

Their biggest challenge Saturday will be an elite receiver in Marshall’s Tyre Brady.

The dynamic Miami native is fourth in the conference is receiving yards despite catching balls from multiple quarterbacks. FIU’s Stantley Thomas-Oliver will most likely draw the assignment versus Brady.

Six points has been the difference between having nine wins vs the seven they currently have.

In the process they’ve dealt with injuries and a quarterback rotation that’s undoubtedly played a part in them being a game short of being in the East division race.

Redshirt freshman Isaiah Green has battled a knee injury and veteran Alex Thomson on his way to establishing himself as the Herd’s future and present. The former three-star prospect is immensely talented and is coming off of his best collegiate performance.

Green threw for 387 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-0 win over UTSA.

If he’s going to put back to back strong performances together, he’ll need to get the ball out of his hands quickly and into the hands of Brady and fellow receiver Obi Obialo.

The Herd’s run game has been a tale of two seasons.

Sophomore Tyler King was well on his way to having another outstanding season before suffering a leg injury against Florida Atlantic. Keion Davis filled in admirably before he himself was hurt last week. It’s now in the hands of Brenden Knox and Anthony Anderson to get the ground game going.

The Panthers have put themselves in position to win their division for the first time in program history. Standing between them and that goal is a dangerous Herd team. The difference in this one will be the ability for FIU to stop the run and can Green get in a rhythm early.
